Metamorphosis. That is the crux of Song Cycle, Convulsions of Time by the Colombian-Dutch composer and sound artist Natalia Domínguez Rangel. Everything slowly changes sound and colour under the voice of Charlotte Riedijk. The songs are settings of texts by Tania Theodorou with the unpredictability of change as a subject. Fascinated by how something new can come from a mating of two things, the composer has slowly pressed the music together in this song cycle. For this she found inspiration in the wonderful timbre of Riedijk’s voice, for whom she has written before. Or, describing Riedijk’s voice in her own words: “effortlessly powerful, but with the soft gleam of the Milky Way’s band of stars in a clear night sky.”
